Dear Friends of the Jessup, Jessup contacts, and Friends of ILSA,
I hope you are having a wonderful summer. The new school year and Jessup season are fast approaching, and preparations are well underway for the new year. The new Official Rules will be posted later today, and the new Jessup Problem will be released in mid-September.
I am writing today to inform you that this (2005-2006) will be my last year as Executive Director of ILSA and as the international administrator of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. It has been a wonderful five years, and I have greatly enjoyed working with all of you. I hope to see everyone in Washington, DC, for the 2006 Shearman & Sterling International Rounds and to say ¡Èfarewell.¡É
The ILSA Board of Directors has now begun the task of looking for a new Executive Director. If you are interested in this position, or know of someone who might be, you should contact the search committee of the Board at EDsearch@ilsa.org.
The E.D. Search Committee will begin reviewing candidates immediately, with the goal of identifying the new E.D. this autumn. The current E.D. will leave on June 30, 2006, but the incoming E.D. should be available to begin work well before then, to allow for training and transition.
Potential candidates are advised of the following:
1. The Executive Director should have a juris doctor degree or its equivalent.
2. The E.D. position is a full-time position, running both the Jessup Competition worldwide and ILSA's conferences, membership activities, and publications (including the ILSA Quarterly and the FOJ Newsletter.)
3. The E.D. is responsible for a staff of two (the E.D. and the Executive Assistant), as well as coordinating a worldwide volunteer corps of over 2000 people.
4. The Executive Office is currently located in Chicago. The E.D. should be willing and able to relocate to Chicago.
5. The candidate should be willing to commit to AT LEAST three (3) years as Executive Director. (The Jessup 50th anniversary is in 2009, and the Board wants to have an experienced Executive Director for the 50th anniversary).
6. Although the current E.D. will serve until June 30, 2006, the Board would like the new Executive Director to start work (training and transition) well before then (in the Spring), so that we can have a smooth transition.
7. The E.D. should have a strong ability and desire to work with law students, professionals, academics, and others from around the world, as well as dignitaries from over 100 countries.
8. Since the Jessup Competition alone now involves nearly 600 schools from almost 100 countries, the E.D. should have strong organizational and time-management skills.
9. The Committee will begin work immediately, with an eye to selecting a candidate or candidates in the next couple of months.
10. Face-to-face interviews, if they are required, will be conducted in Washington, DC.
Interested persons should contact the Executive Director search committee as soon as possible at EDSearch@ilsa.org.
I look forward to working with you this year!
With warmest regards,
Michael Peil
